[MUSIC] Hi, I'm Professor Duck-Joo Lee. I'm coming back. This class deals with the last thing among the five. We started from the first topic of relationships, we went to myself emotions like love, and covered the worries in the last class. Now that you have reflected back on your life, you had several events and met many people but the problems lay in how you responded to those events and people. Let's talk about Response. There is an old saying in Buddhism. The cow drinks water and it turns to milk. The snake drinks water. And it turns to poison. This means the result are different depending on how you respond to situations. As you reflect on what kind of person you are, it'll give you a chance to examine how the results turned out, and more importantly, how you responded to those results later. Have you fallen in love before? When you're falling in love with somebody, everything and every action they take may seem lovely, that otherwise may be different. Depending on my attitude, the other's actions are beautified or not. In other words, depending on what kind of attitude I have, or what kind of person I am, even the same events and actions are shown differently. There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. It is said by William Shakespeare. Today, even though it is a same self-reflection, why don't we focus on how have I responded to events. Let's again practice self-reflection in your way that works best for you. During the reflection you may stop this video lecture to give yourself some extra time, if things come up. If too many things are recalled, try writing it down one by one on paper if you go. I am giving an advice only to help you recall, so you can care less on all this and to just continue straight ahead. Now, let's recall one by one. In childhood, how did you respond to the stories you heard from your parents. Takes some time to think back all the way till now. What is the first picture you recall? Why is the picture recalled first? It is okay to take some time to think. Why, and since when, am I responding that way? Though it was the same parent, did my siblings respond in the same way or did they respond differently? Even though it was the same family environment it is a bit different, isn't it? Why was that? What would have been a better response? Do you think you could do that now? Then, in which occasions, do you get angry? Why do you get angry in such occasions? Where does that anger come from? Does it come from relationships? What has changed, as time pasts and you get older? Did you learn to swallow your anger as you got older? How did other people react to your anger? Have you been angry for the societal policies? Even under the same policies there may be disagreements. But some people prefer pro-active agreements without showing anger. Or were you ever on the other side of the story? Sure, it would be good if everybody had the same opinion, but they are indeed different. In most cases, in the matter of justice and conscience, we can not draw back, right? Let me tell you a story where someone's fate changed by one word. It is a story about Oedipus. Oedipus's father was told at a shrine that his son will kill him. He took this prophecy to heart and threw away his son. Because of the word at the shrine, Oedipus's fate changed. Even in the different story, it is important how you respond to other event. According to the response your fortune will be changed, and your small action will be changed. There may be a small set of words but there are many cases where people take those words to heart and make it their creed for entire life times. Some of them became great people, perhaps others had let it pass but there are cases, where it can be big enough to change my beliefs and my life. In most occasions there are people who live their lives influenced by one negative of phrase. There are these cases especially in middle and high schools, during younger years. Have you seen the movie, The King's Speech? It is based on the true story portraying King George VI, the father of the current Queen Elizabeth of the UK. He came to have a speech impediment from the effect of his caretakers from his childhood. Even as he became the king, the impediment pursued. When he was to address the public for the declaration of war. If the King stutters his speech, that would give a terrible impact to the people. Interestingly he is reminded by his speech therapist that when he sings a song, he doesn't stutter. Neither would be stutter when he insults others. His teacher made him confidence that he does not stutter originally. By recording his reading, by blocking him from hearing his own voice, surprisingly, he didn't stutter at all during his reading. After listening the recording and the confirming that he does not stutter, he is able to fix his impediment through rigorous training. It is that he knew that he does not stutter and then practiced on. He continued to stutter because he only knew of himself as someone who stutters. Thinking it was unfixable. If he knows, that it can be fixed then, there is hope, then there is a practice, then it can be done. My reactions are not originally like that. Because I perceive it wrong, such behaviors come out, furthermore because I perceive it that way, I just think that's just the way it is. Irritation is the same. It is you being over sensitive or not being able to respond adequately to the situation. It is because of the paint over your original pure character. If you paint over once, you continue to paint over it again and again through your life which hardens and sets. Your current personality has been formed in such a way and minor traumas are the same. This life experiences continuously affect you in a negative way. Your childhood experience may suddenly arise at any later moment Triggered by similar conditions. This is called resonance in engineering terminology. As you see in the picture, the mass in the spring oscillates back and forth. The frequency of the oscillation is determined by the weight of the mass and the elasticity of the spring. This frequency is called natural frequency or eigen frequency. Interestingly If an external force is applied to the mass with the same natural frequency of the spring, the response and oscillation is enormous however small the force may be. The natural frequency of this system is one. But similar frequency, 1.01 response enormously compared to the other frequencies. This is a called "Resonance". This video here shows how resonance works. The table vibrate at increasing frequency. As the table's frequency approaches the natural frequency of the system above it. Notice that displacement is increased significantly. It is the frequency 4 hertz. The frequency increased over 4 hertz. Then the middle structure vibrated. And 6.35 hertz. It resonated and goes on. A real life Example of this is the Tacoma Bridge. The bridge made up of cement and the steel, was broken due to the excitation of wind to the steel wire with the same frequency of the natural frequency of the bridge. Thus the bridge rocked hard and eventually collapsed. The result was catastrophic. Even for me, from all the things around me, if there are particularly sensitive topics for me or if I suddenly feel outburst of anger, this is because I have such factors within me. If someone talks badly about a random place, how do you feel? Probably not good, but you just let it pass. But what if that was your hometown or your high school? You might feel annoyed and even angry like the resonance. This is all the same. Depending on what is within me, the sensitivity to my reaction changes, doesn't it? As you practice self-reflection you can understand the mechanism well now. You can even see your stories vividly, can't you? If you have much inside you, what happens? It is no wonder that you are not happy to the scenes that spread around you every moment, everyday. So far, we reflected back on ourselves for the selected five of themes. I recommend that you took self-reflection again, in detail upon these themes at your own time. If you practiced it several times, you will find that your scenes that you've overlooked before and this is an opportunity to reflect on yourself by your self. If you run into problem by doing this or if you want to talk about something, please leave a message in this class forum or e-mail me directly and I will do my best to reply back. Next class, as we wrap up the second week we will find out the remains we have within us, what meaning it has, and also we will see what to do for the life we want to live. Thank you. See you next class.
